Tips on Making Funding Applications
Don Judkins - General Manager Grants - LION FOUNDATION
The Lion Foundation prefer one or two applications per year, and if applications are over $50,000 in a given year it will take a little longer to process.
Get applications in 10 weeks prior if possible (i.e. not 2 weeks), but not a year or two in advance – we want to see the grant spent within 6 months,
Linking the grant to the impact on the community is important, projects that build the capability of an organization are good to support.
Give us some letters from others in the community who appreciate your service.
A follow up letter of how things went is always helpful.
Retrospective grants cannot be made – if you have spent the money already don’t bother applying.
The Lion Foundation states its’ purpose as “Responsibly Funding Community Well-being” and to ensure that there is a fair balance, the template for our grant making is Sport 40%, Community, Arts Culture 30%, Health 20%, Education 10%.
Funds are distributed back into the community where they are raised and any applicant should be aware that we are not in every area of New Zealand and often have to decline an application for this reason.
Some tips on accessing gaming funding:-
1) Check what trust runs the gaming machines nearest to you, uplift a form from the gaming room and apply to that trust or download one from their website.
2) The DIA website will tell you the addresses of the gaming sites throughout New Zealand.

3) Complete the form fully, then get someone to check that you have.
4) You must be a legally constituted body, such as an incorporated society, affiliated to a National organization.
5) Attach all the required information. – Latest financials, resolution from your committee, competitive quotes.
6) Make sure that you disclose any other applications you are making to any other funder.
7) Make sure that you have completed our audit accountabilities for any previous grant.
8) Send the application directly to the trust.
9) Background to your organization and this application is always useful.
We are there for the community so we hope you are successful in your grant seeking
