A new club has started in Rangiora, Canterbury from a photograph and article in the local newspaper. From this one advertisement over 20 people rang the contact name wanting to know more.
After all these players appeared help was needed to coach and administer the club. A second article and photograph was published in the same local newspaper and over half a dozen offers of help came up. These ranged from help with coaching, to providing equipment, help with photocopying, and even a community group offering funds.
It pays to get to know your local media contact. Ring them up and introduce yourself, arrange to have a coffee if possible, learn what type of information they are after, when they need it by. They are always looking for information to include in their publications. But they are more likely to include information you submit if they know you personally.
